Whether you’re coming from Houston or Dallas to San Antonio, road trips are definitely a great way to getaway with your family. It’s an affordable way to explore the beautiful and charming city of San Antonio. There’s so much to do and see. From Houston to San Antonio, you’re looking at a little over 3 hours road trip. That’s just about enough time to getaway. Most people will do a three day trip. However, we think you need at least 4 days to see and experience the city. The best days are usually weekdays as the rates for accommodations are cheaper and the crowds are smaller. Here are tips that will help make your road trip getaway when traveling with family smoother and less stressful.

Take Your Time and Move Slowly

Everything will take longer than you anticipate while you are traveling with your family. Make sure to leave plenty of time and get in your car early in case something goes wrong. You might not be able to fit all the museums, meals, a tours, and a boat ride into one day when you have children traveling with you.

We'd suggest doing one activity and give plenty of time to meals and breaks. You want to enjoy and not be exhausted. Expect to spend one full day for the Riverwalk tour. There's just so much to do.

Never Overpack

Families frequently bring every item their children use at home. By bringing familiar items, you can maintain consistency in your routines.

Instead, pack light and take only the necessary items. There are kids everywhere you go, which is one of the best things about traveling. You can purchase whatever you discover to be lacking when you get to San Antonio.

Make Reservations in Advance

You've already reserved your vacation stay, but pre-planning shouldn't stop there. You’ll need to start thinking about activities and tours to explore the area. If you’re really short on time, we have tours and activities you can purchase ahead of time to give more time for you to enjoy your visit.

Pre-booking extends beyond just accommodations and travel. When planning a trip with your entire family, it might be difficult to think of everything that has to be paid for in advance.

Consider pre-booking your tour travels in advance or use a city pass that covers the number of stays for your stay. All you need to do is decide what venues or activities your family want to see.

Have Snack and Drinks On Hand

Happy kids, happy life. When you are traveling with your family, packing some snacks and drinks will keep your kids happy. During the summer, San Antonio does get very hot so all that traveling and moving around will make the kids thirsty.

There are plenty of eateries for the family but sometimes when your kids start to get irritable, it will calm them down and make the trip a lot more fun for everyone. Not to mention, it will help save some money.

Having food for both you and any other adults going with you is not a bad idea. Both adults and children are capable of getting upset from hunger.

Monitoring Your Child

Always be aware of where your children are, no matter what you're doing, whether everything is running smoothly or you're experiencing a logistic nightmare.

You'd be shocked at how quickly you may become confused while attempting to do things like purchase tour tickets. The next thing you know, your child has gone over to the candy shop to look at the candies. You could have a moment of worry if those candy bars are on the opposite side of a shelf from where you can't see your youngster.

Share responsibilities if you're traveling with another adult or parent. While the other looks after the kids, one person purchases the tickets. Make sure the kids are always visible if you're going by yourself with them. Hold their hands if necessary, or ask them to sit so you can see them.

Even the most attentive parent may misplace their kids. If your kids have a tendency to stray, you might want to use a tiny GPS tracker that you can fasten to their clothes or belt. If your youngster wanders too far, the tracker will let you know and allow you to follow them to see precisely where they went.

Bring Basic Medicines

Having a sick family member can spoil your travel experience. If everyone in the family becomes sick, it might grow even worse. You want to be ready to help out, whether they have an upset stomach to an allergic reaction.

It’s always a good idea to have on-hand some over-the-counter medications your family might need while traveling. These medications may include:

  • Headache medicines

  • Allergy medicines

  • Medicine for upset stomach

Whenever possible, take your medications in their original packaging, especially prescription medications. If you can’t take the original package, take a copy of the prescription from your doctor so you can show exactly what your prescription.

Before your trip, check regulations for your destination and confirm you’re allowed to bring your medication without filling out additional paperwork or getting special permission.

Bring Electronic Devices

When you’re traveling with kids, keeping them entertained is critical. It can make the difference between a great trip and a miserable one.

One way to keep kids entertained while traveling is to let them use personal electronics during downtimes. Appropriate times to use electronics could be on a long car ride, in long lines, or while waiting for performances.

Whether you use a tablet, a phone, or a video game system, your kids are sure to be amused. Even if your home is typically electronics-free or you limit electronics, traveling is a time when you may want to let those rules slide for the kids.

Having a personal electronic device can keep kids quiet and happy for long periods of time, especially if they are a novelty.
